Melany, Polzeath

With the sea literally on its doorstep, this new build in Polzeath replaced an outdated bungalow, that although had reached the end of its life, offered an incredible location. We responded to the client (a professional couple from London with two small children) in their request to create a luxury coastal holiday rental that would appeal to families. As we were part of the project from the beginning, we were able to specify the exterior cladding and garden design as well as creating the interior environment in its entirety, including the bathrooms and kitchens.

It was important not to obstruct the sea views nor detract from the natural surroundings and so we chose a palette of neutral tones inspired by seashells and sandy shores, referencing the building’s proximity to the sea with textures and patterns rather than traditional ocean colours.

A deep blue textured wall in the hallway, patterned tiling in the bathrooms, joyful jellyfish wallpaper in the downstairs toilet and bespoke vanity units from bespoke furniture makers Parker, Howley and Co added richness and depth. Chosen for rental practicality, the key furniture pieces, while quite sculptural in their form, provided a modern Nordic aesthetic without sacrificing comfort, sourced from &Tradition and Loaf. Linen jutes, textural accents and soft tones were used throughout the property. Stone featured heavily at Melany with a mixture of tiling from Artisan of Devizes and basins from Lusso. Our favourite lighting supplier Mullan was used for pendants to created depth and shadow.

To maximise the coastal position, Melany benefited from reverse living. We created areas where families could happily spend time with their own space by creating a children’s bunk room and snug and a versatile nook that could be used for quiet reading or an office space.

Melany is available to rent through Latitude50.
